Evidence and Property Division
The Evidence and Property Division is responsible for the storage and return of property recovered by the Sheriff’s Office. The unit is responsible for the handling, processing, and disposal of all property and evidence.
Requirements for release of property:
Legal and departmental requirements govern the return of property. You may call us at 706-439-6066 for specific information about the item you wish to pick up. This will allow the Evidence and Property Unit to process your request and will eliminate delays. Positive photo identification (drivers license or state issued ID) will be required for the release of property.
With the exception of firearms, the owner of the property may, designate another person to pick up the property. This will require a signed and notarized affidavit from the owner of the property. The affidavit must be specific as to what property may be obtained on your behalf and the name of the person to whom the property may be released.
Different property types:
Found Property:
Found property consists of items found and the owner is generally not known. Found property will be held for 90 days from the date it was received. After 90 days the property will be disposed of pursuant to State Law.
Safekeeping Property:
Any safekeeping property received from an officer will be held for 90 days. Safekeeping property will be released to the listed owner. After 90 days the property will be disposed of pursuant to State Law.
Evidence:
Any item held as evidence will require a written release to be returned to the owner. This released must come from the District Attorney’s Office, a case officer or case detective, or from a Judge. Final court disposition documents are not accepted in lieu of a release for a felony case.

The Evidence and Property unit is open to the public Monday-Thursday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. The unit is located at the Union County Sheriff’s Office, 378 Beasley Street, Blairsville, GA 30512.
